My name is Atsumi Gestson and I am the owner of Seattle Natural Soap. I am originally from Japan and I moved to Washington in 2001, where my husband is from.
How I met handmade natural soap
A friend of mine once gave me a handmade natural soap and it totally changed my life.
Prior to that, I always needed hand lotion after washing my hands. After using the handmade natural soap there was no need for hand lotion. I started wondering what ingredients were in the soaps I had used.
After looking up through the internet, I found out that there are many harmful things contained in the soaps on the market, so I decided to start making my own 100% pure natural soaps.
I always pay attention to what I eat, but I never thought to check the labels on soaps, shampoo and toothpaste. Now I feel deeply grateful to my friend for introducing me to handmade natural soaps.
Seattle Natural Soap beginning
I am the kind of person that if I like something, I become very committed to it. Once I found out about the great qualities of handmade natural soaps, I started making soaps almost every day. As I started giving those soaps to my friends, co-workers and family members, some of them advised me to start selling those soaps. That is what motivated me to start my own business. I spent a lot of time creating original recipes for my soaps, trying to find and use only natural, but unique ingredients that are not commonly found in soaps on the market. I wanted to incorporate great medicinal herbs well known in Japan, but not much in the United States. After going through many trials and errors, I finally decided on the soaps I am currently selling.
Because all my soap-making process involves manual work, it is really time consuming, but also worthwhile when I hear many people telling me how much they enjoy my soaps.
My husband has been supporting me and my business by making tools such as soap-shaping wood boxes and soap cutters. His support is really precious and I am truly grateful.
